Learn to make a small home for Durga Puja using items already present in your storage box.
If you live in a small apartment or have limited space, decorating your home can sometimes feel challenging, so the good news is that you don’t need a large living room to create a beautiful setup; you only need a few materials that you have kept to throw. Use those items and make your home a little colorful, welcoming, and festive. A small corner, a window, a shelf, or even a wall can become a lovely festive space with a few flowers, some fabric, and simple handmade decorations. The idea is to work with the space you already have instead of trying to fill every empty corner.
What You Need—
Don’t impulsively buy everything; look around your home. You may already have many things that can be used for decoration. You don’t need all of these. Choose a few that match your existing home décor.
Some useful materials include:
- Fresh or artificial flowers
- Old dupattas or sarees
- Fairy lights
- Small diyas or LED diyas
- Jute rope
- Ribbon or lace
- Paper
- Cardboard
- Small glass jars
- Green leaves
- Beads or decorative stones
- Small wall hangings
- A clean tray or wooden board
- Double-sided tape or removable hooks
Create a Small Puja Corner
Choose one clean corner of your home and turn it into your festive space. It could be a small table, a shelf, a corner of your living room, a console table, or a clean section of a cabinet.

Place your puja essentials in the center and keep the surrounding decoration simple. A few flowers, a small diya, and warm lights are enough to give your home positive vibes.
Tip: Keep some empty space around the setup. In a small home, leaving breathing room can make the decoration look more elegant.
Use an Old Saree or Dupatta as a Backdrop
This is one of the easiest ways to decorate a wall without buying a new backdrop. Take an old saree or dupatta in a festive color and hang it behind your puja corner. You can choose colors such as red, white, yellow, orange, pink, and cream.
You don’t need to cover the entire wall. Simply create a small backdrop behind your main decoration and add a few flowers or fairy lights around it, and you will have an instant festive corner.
Make a Simple Flower Toran
A flower toran can make even a small doorway feel festive. You can use fresh flowers, artificial flowers, or even handmade paper flowers. For a simple version, take a piece of thread or jute and arrange flowers and leaves along it.

Secure them carefully. Add a ribbon or fabric strip at the ends and hang it above your doorway or puja corner. For more such DIY toran ideas, read here.
Decorate One Wall Instead of the Whole Room

When space is limited, don’t try to decorate every wall. Choose one wall that you want to make decorative. You can create a simple arrangement using paper flowers, fabric, a handmade wall hanging, fairy lights, small framed artwork, and a traditional-inspired pattern, which will give you a decorated area without making your entire home feel crowded.
Add an Alpana-Inspired Floor Design
A small floor decoration can make a big difference. If you have some open floor space near your entrance or puja corner, create a simple alpana-inspired design using white rangoli powder or another suitable material. Try to make it using small flowers, dots, curved lines, leaves, and simple geometric shapes.
Use Flowers Instead of Lots of Decorations
Flowers are an easy way to bring color into a small room without taking up much physical space. You can place a small arrangement around your puja setup.

For example, in a glass jar, on a tray, around a diya, or along the edge of a shelf. Marigolds, jasmine, roses, and other locally available flowers can work beautifully. You can also combine flowers with green leaves for a more natural look.
Turn Old Glass Jars Into Festive Lanterns
Give a second life to your empty glass jars that have not been used for a long time. Clean the jar thoroughly and decorate the outside with a small piece of ribbon, jute, or a simple paper design.

For a safer option, place an LED tealight inside. You can place the jar on a shelf, beside your puja corner, on a table or near a window. If you are using a real candle, make sure the container and surrounding decorations are suitable for heat and keep flammable materials away from the flame.
Add Warm Fairy Lights
Fairy lights are particularly useful when decorating a small home because they add atmosphere without taking up much space. You can place them around your backdrop, along a shelf, around a window, or behind your puja setup or around a wall hanging.
Warm white lights will create a soft, festive appearance without competing with your other decorations. Don’t use too many lights at once. A small arrangement is usually enough for a compact space.
Make a Small Festive Tray
If you don’t have room for a large decoration, decorate a tray instead.
Take a clean tray and arrange flowers, leaves, a diya or LED diya, small decorative elements & a small bowl or container.
You can place the finished tray on a coffee table, side table, or shelf.
The best part is that you can move it whenever you need the space for something else.
Make a DIY Wall Hanging
A small handmade wall hanging will add personality without using floor space.
You can make one using cardboard, jute, fabric scraps, beads, paper flowers, ribbon & wooden sticks.

Paint or cover the base, add your decorative details, and attach a small loop at the back for hanging. You can also reuse an old wall hanging by adding flowers, fabric, or other festive details.
Decorate Your Windowsill
Don’t forget the smallest spaces, like the windowsill, which can become a beautiful mini festive corner. Place a few small elements such as one or two LED diyas, flowers, a tiny plant, a small handmade decoration & fairy lights
Avoid overcrowding the sill, especially if the window is frequently opened.
Keep the Decoration Vertical
Here’s a useful trick for a small home. Use your walls instead of your floor.
Hang decorations rather than placing everything on tables and floors. Decorate your wall with fabric, flowers, and fairy lights. On your table place all the puja essentials with a small flower arrangement. Draw a small alpana-inspired design. This gives you three layers of decoration without needing a lot of space.
Few Tips—
When you are decorating a small home, remember that more decoration doesn’t always mean a more beautiful decoration. You can try these simple rules:
- Choose one focal point—decide what you want people to notice first: your puja corner or festive wall.
- Keep your colors limited—2 or 3 main colors are usually enough.
- Mix textures—Combine fabric, flowers, wood, jute, or paper rather than using lots of similar decorations.
- Leave some empty space—empty space helps your decorations stand out.
- Use what you already have—old fabric, jars, ribbons, and craft supplies can become part of your decoration.
Reuse your last year’s decorations this festive season. Instead of using them exactly as they were last year, combine them differently. An old toran can become part of a wall decoration this time. A leftover ribbon can decorate a tray. Old flowers can be arranged around a new backdrop. You don’t need a huge budget or a picture-perfect home. Start with one corner, use what you already have, and let your creativity do the rest. That’s a very Blunder to Wonder way of decorating.
